Choirs will take over town centre streets on 30th September...

A second annual musical takeover of Wrexham will see choirs from North Wales and the North West perform to thousands of visitors in the town centre.

Wrexham Singing Streets is returning following a successful inaugural event last year, featuring up to 30 choirs across seven venues on Saturday September 30.

​

National Eisteddfod and Britain’s Got Talent finalists Only Boys Aloud will be appearing for the first time, along with North Wales Opera Studio.

​

Other highlights include a mass singalong in Queen’s Square and performances by two signing choirs, who perform in British Sign Language for the deaf.

Tenovus choir - which supports people living with cancer - are also taking to the stage at the event, which is organised by Wrexham MP Ian Lucas.

He said: “We’re absolutely thrilled that Wrexham Singing Streets will be happening again this year. It’s a great way to celebrate the town’s tradition of singing.

“There is something unique about the ability of live music and street entertainment to bring people together and this year’s programme will be even more diverse.

“We’ve got choirs from Wrexham and the wider region who are already confirmed to play and they will no doubt bring an army of supporters with them which will add to the occasion.

“Choirs and audiences really enjoyed mixing together and sharing their music last year and everyone in Wrexham can enjoy their music – and much more – again in 2017, all for free.”

Mr Lucas added: “A great deal of thanks goes to those businesses whose support helps put on the event.

​

“The backing of Eagles' Meadow with both funding and as a venue for choirs, and the financial support of companies like Costa Coffee and Wockhardt, really does make a difference to the communities they serve.”

Wrexham Singing Streets grew out of Wrexham Town Centre Forum’s popular street festivals and the number of locations has been expanded to seven to reflect its popularity.

The confirmed venues are: Wrexham Museum, Lord Street (Wrexham Bus Station), Queens Square, Hope Street, Church Street, Chester Street and Eagles Meadow.

Wrexham Glyndwr University is involved with the festival for the first time this year and hosted the launch in its Centre for the Creative Industries today (Monday), featuring a performance by children from Ysgol Bodhyfryd.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Maria Hinfelaar said: “Wrexham Singing Streets is rapidly establishing itself as an important fixture in the town’s annual events calendar and as a community university we are delighted to be involved.

“The university has a long and proud association with music in Wrexham and we look forward to welcoming everyone to the town in September.”
