Magic Dragon Brewing based at The Plassey Leisure Park have been working hard during this challenging time for small independent breweries. As well as doing home deliveries of real ale in mini kegs and bottles, the brewery has produced two new beers.
Lockdown is a craft lager based on the old Cream Ale originally brewed by Welsh brewers in pre-prohibition America. The picture on the front of the bottle is of Charles Street, Wrexham where the breweries Tap Bar is located.
Richard Lever, head brewer said “having a reduction in brewing has meant that I could take the time in developing a craft lager, a first for Magic Dragon Brewing. But it has been hard work to survive through this lockdown and we have changed focus to supply more beer direct to the customer instead of pubs and bars. We really appreciate our loyal customers who have ordered from us over last couple of months”
The second bottled beer is Lost Summer, an IPA made with American hops and Welsh water. The beer is a homage to the Californian beer you might be have been drinking on holiday if it were not for the Covid-19 outbreak.
More bottled beers are in in production, including a Welsh Stout. The beers are available direct from the brewery or from The Plassey Stores on site.
Magic Dragon Brewing started making real ale in 2017 from their 12-barrel brew plant based at The Plassey Leisure Park, Eyton Wrexham. It is run by couple Richard and Liz Lever who employ two brewery assistants from the local area.
They produce a core range of cask conditioned real ale as well as seasonal beers. The brewery supplies pubs, bars, restaurants and shops in a 30 mile radius.
In 2019 they won two awards, Bronze for British Premium Bitter (4.5% to 6.4%) and Gold for British bitter (up to 4.4%) in the Wales and West country region of the Society of Independent Brewers Association (SIBA) awards.
In December 2019, the brewery opened their first Bar on Charles Street, Wrexham serving real ale from the brewery as well as other local suppliers. The bar is planning to reopen after lockdown in early September when the bar has been made slightly bigger.
